In the fall of 2016, Google launched an add-on to Google Photos called PhotoScan that is aimed at helping you digitize your old photos from “pre-digital” era. While it’s not as good as actually scanning them individually on a high-quality scanner, I did spend a few hours digitizing my old albums.

When Photos finished re-uploading, I immediately downgraded my iCloud storage plan back to 200 GB. To do that, I opened System Preferences > iCloud, clicked the Manage button, clicked Change Storage Plan, clicked Downgrade Options, selected the 200 GB plan, and clicked Done. I hoped there wouldn’t be an additional charge for the 24 hours I was on the 2 TB plan, but I didn’t think I’d know that for a month.

This is a variation on a great tip that was posted a while back by IconMaster to get to iOS screenshots from OS X, but by specifying any images in the search you can access all the Photo Stream images rather than only screen captures. If you do want to see only screen shots searching for file type “PNG” will achieve that.

Photo Stream is Apple's way of managing your mobile photos you shoot with your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad. Once enabled on all your devices in your iCloud settings, these photos will be available on each device within Apple's photo management apps. On iOS devices, you would use the Photos app, on OS X devices, you would usually use iPhoto. However, over time iPhoto can become slow and simply too heavy to be the optimal app to access your Photo Stream photos. This is where MyPhotostream comes in: a lightweight app dedicated to your Photo Stream photos only.
Google also does a great job with helping you recall past photos, automatic album creation, and making special videos (for Mother’s Day, I was able to make a special video of all of your children with my wife from birth to now in about 5 seconds). While I prefer the Memories function of iCloud Photos Library, Google Photos is no slouch here.
